I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I think I may have the right symptoms for bacterial vaginosis (foul smell, itchy). I'm on my period so I don't know if I'm having weird discharge. I also just lost my virginity, which I heard can add to the cause (new sexual partner).
I've never been to a gynecologist. I want to seek treatment/diagnosis from a doctor but this is something that I can't let my parents find out about; should I go to Planned Parenthood, or can I go to a gynecologist w/o my parents finding out? Also I'm not sure how I'd pay for all of this so would Planned Parenthood be free?

ALSO, are there any home remedies I can try in the meantime (I've heard yogurt)?

First off if you are just going off of foul smell & itchy you might be over reacting. There are many other issues with those symptoms. It does not matter where you go they are not allowed to discuss your visit with your parents. Look into your state because some states do have loop holes where they can call your parents on certain cases (i.e. pregnancy, etc in a minor). Planned Parenthood goes off of your income, Health Department goes off of your income. My recommendation: Talk to your mother. She may be upset for a while but she WILL appreciate you being honest with her.

If you do yogurt it has to be plain yogurt...

i went to the doctor 2 months ago with a yeast infection and the doctor gave me one pill to take because she said it was only a mild infection and probably caused by antibiotics i was on before. over the next two weeks it still didnt feel right down there.. the pill seemed to have helped but my discharge was still thick (paste-like) and had a weird smell. then it got worse..it started itching really bad.. it was so uncomfortable. so i went back to the doctor and this time she told me it was bacterial vaginosis... even though it felt exactly the same as before only worse. she gave me 14 pills and told me to take them twice a day for 7 days. i did this. the pills made my mouth dry and taste like metal and my pee dark and smell horrible but i kept taking them. this was two weeks ago and STILL something feels wrong. my discharge is still thick (not AS thick as before but thicker than when everything felt normal).. and every once in a while it gets a slight itching feeling, a tickling feeling almost, that only stays for a few minutes. my "down there" doctor isnt covered on my insurance and i can't afford to keep going back!
i'm hoping someone could help me treat this problem myself. if i treated it like a yeast infection and used monistat and it ended up being BV would that make it worse? what are some home remedies for bv? any info you have please share!

This yeast infection treatment is quite effective with many types of infections because God has created the body with mechanisms to combat disease. So you will probably have success using this natural routine - Yeast Infection: Douche morning and evening with a two quart hot water bottle/douche/enema bag. Filling it with as hot of water as you can tolerate but not so hot that it burns you. This is very effective at killing yeast as it summons your own white blood cells to the area of infection and they do a splendid job of killing the infection. One or two days treatment is normally required to get over most yeast infections.

So I'm 90% sure I have bacterial vaginosis, I've been searching it up online and my symptoms match. I have the fishy odor, and the yellow discharge, and had the itchy/irritated vagina before that. I've had this for about a month now, and I cannot get rid of it. I know the simplest solution would be going to a doctor and getting a prescription, but then my mom would have to know about all this. I don't want my mom to know, because I am young, and I am having sex ( using condoms and birth control ). I've also tried some home remedies, like applying yougurt to the vagina area, which got rid of the smell for the most part, but not the discharge.
What I'm trying to say, is I need the easiest way possible to get rid
of this, last choice being going to a doctor.

You have to see a doctor. You can't treat BV at home. It can lead to VERY serious problems if left untreated. Please have your mom take you to the doctor. You have an infection. BV is not an STD, almost all females get it from time to time, I'm sure your moms had it before.

The actual BV Cures strategy is outlined inside the book Bacterial Vaginosis Relief, and it describes an easy, yet powerful solution to treating bacterial vaginosis (or BV).

I expended lots of time on the Internet in search of healthy BV cures before getting this particular ebook. At first, I'll admit, I was looking for free as well as healthy solutions, because I had previously spent sufficient cash on the issue at my doctor's office and at the drugstore. I'd been sure there had to be something available on the web which I would be able to adhere to quickly and effortlessly.

Even so, even though I found a few herbal BV cures online, and I tried a few, nothing at all really did the trick. That is when I made a decision to purchase Bacterial Vaginosis Relief. I figured that if the program failed to work, it was possible to get a refund!

The Benefit of the BV Cures Guide

Now, my greatest problem with BV prior to this had been that irrespective of what treatment I used, the condition was not ever genuinely healed. Of course, it could be stopped briefly, but I needed more than merely short lived assistance, I needed a genuine remedy.

The great thing with regards to the BV Relief guide is the fact that it presented a real cure, not just a momentary "band aid" solution that I would need to constantly repeat to achieve enduring and longer lasting alleviation. All illness in your body is a manifestation of an inherent problem, plus I knew that there was certainly something at the root of this recurring infection. In fact, if my own body was completely vibrant, I would not frequently experience BV attacks.

The Downside of the Bacterial Vaginosis Relief Book

The biggest "problem", if you can think of it as that, is that even though the treatment for the disease is straightforward, it isn't particularly easy! Typically an imbalance in your body can be corrected however only by making certain alterations to one's life-style, which involves the foods that a person eats. As any regular dieter is aware, modifying your eating routine isn't the least difficult thing in the world (if it were, nobody would be overweight).

Using the system in this particular bacterial vaginosis cures ebook does call for you making some changes in your life, However if you do keep going you are going to be successful. Nonetheless, should you stick to the system to the letter, heal your BV and then return to living your previous lifestyle... well odds are that you'll get the infection recurring once again.

I was prescribed flagyl for bacterial vaginosis 3 days ago and started taking it...however, the symptoms are still present. I know there is no "at home remedy" but is there SOMETHING i can buy in the drug store to just ease the discomfort while it's clearing up? I can't take it anymore =(

never mind piling drugs on top of other drugs, if its a thrush infection caused by your medication then the best thing to make the itching go away is using natural unsweetened yoghurt down there. it sounds weird but its safe and it has natural bacteria that balance and will help get rid of any irritation.

I have a never ending battle with BV, I try home remedies and eating alot of yogurt but nothing ever seems to help. I happened to have a leftover rx for Cephalexin and I was wondering if I could use it to save a trip to the doctor.

Nope. Cephalexin won't treat BV. You need a new Rx.

BTW, unless you had a bad reaction to it, you should NEVER have any leftover antibiotics. You should take then all.

i have all the symptoms for bacterial vaginosis and i was thinking of buying acidophilus tablets to help get rid of it because i don't want to use antibiotics as they get rid of good bacteria. do you think this will work? also does anyone know of home remedies that will get rid of bv? i'm going to try using tea tree oil in the bath, has anyone tried this?

The only thing I have found that works is a product called FemDophilus by Jarrow Formulas, however it is not supposed to be used as treatment, but as prevention. This is an acidolphilus combination that has the proper strands needed to maintain a healthy ph. Regular acidophilus (like in yogurt) does not provide the proper strands to colinate in the vagina. While it does help boost the amount, they will not stay and colonize there. The best thing to do is to go to the gyno and get medication and you will be prescribed an antibiotic, which can cause yeast infections. The yeast infection can be treated after the antibiotics are finished. I wouldn't try any home remidies before consulting a doctor, it could cause more harm than good.

I've decided to start some home remedies for my bacterial vaginosis as nothing else has worked. Is it okay to continue taking birth control pills while treating my bv or will this make it harder to get rid of? Also, has anyone with bacterial vaginosis used RepHresh to help them get rid of it? Would it be okay to use this as well?

BV is treatable with antibiotics prescribed by a health care provider. Two different antibiotics are recommended as treatment for BV: metronidazole or clindamycin.Although BV will sometimes clear up without treatment, all women with symptoms of BV should be treated to avoid such complications as PID. Male partners generally do not need to be treated. However, BV may spread between female sex partners. The following basic prevention steps can help reduce the risk of upsetting the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina and developing BV:
Be abstinent.
Limit the number of sex partners.
Do not douche.
Use all of the medicine prescribed for treatment of BV, even if the signs and symptoms go away.
Bacterial vaginosis natural remedies

Natural cures for bacterial vaginosis prove effective in a majority of cases. Let's see what they are:

a. Yogurt:Lactobacillusacidophilus and L. bifidus, present in yogurt, help restore the acidic balance in the vagina. They can either be taken orally or introduced directly into the vagina. Plain yogurt, containing live acidophilus cultures, can be eaten directly. The acidophilus powder or capsules can be taken orally too. Vaginal inserts, in the form of tampons soaked in yogurt, is another effective alternative that improves the vaginal environment.
Beta-dine and gentian violet: Beta-dine and gentian violet are excellent in countering Candida vulvovaginitis. Betadine is an effective antiseptic iodine solution, but shouldn't be used for treating bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy. Gentian violet is an effective antifungal stain. While both are effective in curing the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, they're messy and leave stains. Some women may be allergic to either or both of them.
Nutritional supplements: The antioxidants in vitamins, like vitamins A, C, D and E, as well as, B complex, help in treating bacterial vaginosis. Topical applications of vitamin E from prepared creams or powdered capsules help relieve itching.
Dietary restrictions: Foods that yeast organisms thrive on, like cheese, alcohol, chocolate, soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, fruits, fermented foods or those containing molds, like blue cheese, should be avoided.
Warm bath: An ordinary warm bath or a shallow sitz bath can be very soothing to irritated genital tissues. But don't use soap, as it leaches out the skin's natural oils that act as the body's natural lipid barriers against germs.
Cold compresses: If swelling and itching is making you feel miserable, cold compresses can help. When you place a cold washcloth across the affected area, it causes the blood vessels to constrict and makes the area less red and swollen.
The treatment for bacterial vaginosis of the natural kind offers a safe, cheap and effective alternative. However, always consult your physician before opting for this solution. As for the RepHresh there have been studies showing it works for BV in some women. I posted some links below that might be helpful
